A compelling dive into one of South America’s most complex ecological crises. A relic of Colombia’s controversial past, African hippopotamuses now inhabit the country’s most vital river system, posing an immediate threat to the ecosystem. Cocaine Hippos unravels this intricate global struggle—bringing together international conservationists, legal experts, and local communities in search of a sustainable solution for both the territory and the species.

This film follows florist, Mallory Browne (Mallory with the Flowers) as she explores innovative approaches to cultivation, packaging, sales, and, crucially, flower consumption. For decades, flowers have symbolised Colombian pride and served as a reminder of the country for foreigners. But many of the roses, lilies, and carnations you see at the supermarket around Valentine’s Day have travelled a long way to get there from Colombia.

The Bogotá Museum of Modern Art (MAMBO) and Johnnie Walker invited Spencer Tunick to create one of his signature works, conceptualizing the end of the conflict between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). A conflict that for approximately 50 years created stories of both pain and reconciliation, as told in this film through the stories of five victims (civilians, former guerrillas, and Colombian army personnel). The goal of this co-production was to demonstrate support and foster reconciliation by leveraging the possibilities of audiovisual language.
